This is a working overview of Epitalon, written for readers who want more than a one-paragraph summary but less than a textbook.
Reviewed 2025-09-10. Anything still debated is marked as such rather than presented as settled.
Epitalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide with the sequence alanine–glutamate–aspartate–glycine, commonly abbreviated AEDG. Its design traces to epithalamin, a peptide fraction prepared from bovine pineal gland extracts that researchers in Saint Petersburg began investigating in the 1970s. The compound has a molecular formula of C14H22N4O9 and a nominal molecular mass near 390 daltons. It holds no approved drug status in the United States or the European Union, and material sold under this name is generally offered as a research chemical rather than a finished pharmaceutical product.
Proposed mechanisms centre on cell-culture observations rather than a defined receptor interaction. Several reports describe increased expression of the telomerase catalytic subunit after exposure of cultured human cells, and the authors attributed the effect to short peptide fragments entering the nucleus and influencing gene transcription. No receptor for the tetrapeptide has been identified, and the free peptide is expected to be degraded rapidly by plasma peptidases. Whether any measurable fraction reaches intact tissues after administration remains an unresolved question rather than an established finding.
The published literature is dominated by a small number of research groups, much of it in Russian-language journals, and independent replication outside those groups is limited. Studies are typically small, use cultured cells or rodent models, and report endpoints that differ between papers, which makes comparison difficult. Large randomised human trials have not appeared in the indexed literature. Questions about absorption, distribution and clearance are therefore still treated as open in reviews that mention the compound.
Solubility is high in water, phosphate-buffered saline and normal saline, a pattern that follows from the two acidic residues in the chain. The peptide dissolves poorly in non-polar solvents such as hexane or chloroform. Stock solutions are often prepared in water first and then diluted into the buffer of interest. Because the molecule is small and hydrophilic, filtration through a low-protein-binding membrane is usually straightforward, and visible particulates are uncommon in freshly made solutions.
Identity and purity are established with reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. The chromatogram shows the main peak and any truncated or oxidised by-products, while the mass spectrum confirms the expected 390 dalton mass. Amino acid analysis can corroborate composition when a sample's origin is uncertain. Counterion content, particularly residual trifluoroacetate from purification, is frequently reported alongside purity because it shifts the net mass of the solid.
Reference material is normally supplied as a lyophilised powder in a sealed vial. Product literature typically recommends storage at minus twenty degrees Celsius or colder, protected from light and moisture. Freeze-thaw cycling is usually avoided because repeated condensation can introduce water into the vial. Working solutions are commonly prepared fresh, aliquoted, and kept cold for short periods rather than stored at ambient temperature. Labelling the date of opening helps track how long a vial has been in use.

Published work on this compound consists mainly of in vitro experiments, animal studies, and small clinical investigations, a substantial share of which appeared in Russian-language journals. Sample sizes are generally small, control conditions differ between studies, and several endpoints rely on markers whose clinical meaning is itself debated. Reviews of the longevity field treat the peptide as an early example of telomerase-directed research rather than an established intervention. Regulatory treatment varies by country: some jurisdictions place it under prescription controls, others treat it as a laboratory material, and importation may be restricted regardless of local status.
Epitalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide whose sequence is alanine–glutamate–aspartate–glycine, commonly abbreviated AEDG. It was developed in Russia during the 1980s and 1990s by investigators associated with the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology, who studied short peptides as regulators of gene expression and tissue function. The alternative spelling epithalon appears interchangeably in the literature, and the two names refer to the same molecule. Outside Russia it is encountered chiefly as a research chemical rather than a licensed medicine, and it holds no approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration or the European Medicines Agency.
The peptide is a synthetic analogue of epithalamin, a preparation extracted from bovine pineal glands. Investigators sought a short, chemically defined molecule that would reproduce some of the endocrine and gerontological observations attributed to the glandular extract. Proposed mechanisms centre on induction of telomerase activity, an effect reported in cultured human somatic cells in the early 2000s, together with influences on melatonin secretion and neuroendocrine regulation. Those mechanisms remain incompletely characterised, and the reported telomerase response has not been consistently reproduced by independent groups working in comparable systems.
Storage and handling follow conventional peptide practice. Lyophilized epitalon is typically kept refrigerated or frozen, protected from moisture and light, and allowed to equilibrate to room temperature before opening to avoid condensation. Once dissolved, aqueous solutions are usually stored cold and used within a short period, since dilute peptide solutions can support microbial growth and may slowly degrade. The absence of cysteine and methionine reduces, but does not eliminate, oxidation concerns during long-term storage.
Regulatory status varies by country and is not harmonized. Epitalon is not an approved drug in major Western jurisdictions. In some countries it is sold as a research chemical, and in others it has appeared in products marketed for other categories. This inconsistent status means that purity, labeling accuracy, and documentation differ widely between suppliers, and verification of identity and purity through independent analysis is the usual way buyers assess a given lot.
That promise is null and void if Zverev – and the media – isn't willing to be honest." At the beginning of the 2024 Australian Open, a court official announced that Zverev was scheduled to stand trial before the Tiergarten District Court in Berlin. The timing of the announcement, combined with Zverev's semifinal run at the tournament, brought heightened interest in and scrutiny of the allegations from both the press and the public. The trial began on 31 May 2024. On 7 June 2024, the third day of the trial, the judge agreed to a request by the public prosecution office, endorsed by the alleged victim, to provisionally terminate the proceedings subject to the condition that Zverev pay €200,000, of which €150,000 would go to the German State Treasury and €50,000 to charitable organizations. The trial therefore concluded without a finding of guilt. The prosecutor's request to terminate the proceedings followed an out-of-court agreement between Zverev and the alleged victim, the terms of which were not disclosed. According to his counsel, Zverev entered into the agreement "to put a quick end to the proceedings – above all in the interest of their child", emphasizing that the agreement "includes no determination or admission of guilt".
Norhydrocodone is the major metabolite of the opioid analgesic hydrocodone. It is formed from hydrocodone in the liver via N-demethylation predominantly by CYP3A4. Unlike hydromorphone, a minor metabolite of hydrocodone, norhydrocodone is described as inactive. However, norhydrocodone is actually an agonist of the μ-opioid receptor with similar potency to hydrocodone, but has been found to produce only minimal analgesia when administered peripherally to animals. This is likely due to poor blood-brain-barrier and thus central nervous system penetration.
=== Growth factors for vascularization, migration, degradation, proliferation === Stroma contains extracellular matrix components such as proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans which are highly negatively charged, largely due to sulfated regions, and bind growth factors and cytokines, acting as a reservoir of these cytokines. In tumors, cancer cells secrete matrix degrading enzymes, such as matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) that, once cleaved and activated, degrade the matrix, thereby releasing growth factors that signal for the growth of cancer cells. MMPs also degrade ECM to provide space for vasculature to grow to the tumor, for the tumor cells to migrate, and for the tumor to continue to proliferate.
== Definition == The classifications of substances as performance-enhancing substances are not entirely clear-cut and objective. As in other types of categorization, certain prototype performance enhancers are universally classified as such (like anabolic steroids), whereas other substances (like vitamins and protein supplements) are virtually never classified as performance enhancers despite their effects on performance. As is usual with categorization, there are borderline cases; caffeine, for example, is considered a performance enhancer by some but not others.

Although a biological joint can resemble a man-made joint in being a hinge or a ball and socket, the engineering problems that nature must solve are very different because the joint works within an almost completely solid structure, with no wheels or nuts and bolts. In general, the bearing surfaces of manmade joints interlock, as in a hinge. This is rare for biological joints (although the badger's jaw interlocks). More often the surfaces are held together by cord-like ligaments. Virtually all the space between muscles, ligaments, bones, and cartilage is filled with pliable solid tissue. The fluid-filled gap is at most only a twentieth of a millimetre thick. This means that synovium has certain jobs to do. These may include:
It is perfectly legitimate to write [H+] for the hydronium ion concentration, since the state of solvation of the proton is constant (in dilute solutions) and so does not affect the equilibrium concentrations. Kw varies with variation in ionic strength and/or temperature. The concentrations of H+ and OH− are not independent quantities. Most commonly [OH−] is replaced by Kw[H+]−1 in equilibrium constant expressions which would otherwise include hydroxide ion. Solids also do not appear in the equilibrium constant expression, if they are considered to be pure and thus their activities taken to be one. An example is the Boudouard reaction:
Elements of the VC 5th Division attacked Xuân Lộc Base Camp which was defended by the 7th Battalion, 9th Artillery Regiment and the 2nd Battalion, 35th Artillery Regiment, 54th Artillery Group. The VC penetrated the perimeter but were eventually driven out airstrikes and a unit of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. The attack resulted in 24 VC and 14 U.S. killed.
== History == Metropolis was founded by Dr. Sushil Kanubhai Shah in 1980. The healthcare company was started as a single diagnostic laboratory in Mumbai. Shah's daughter, Ameera Shah, took over the pathology business in 2001. The company started out by partnering with local and regional diagnostic chains, thereby spreading its reach across the country. Metropolis Healthcare has expanded into new service areas, like Clinical Research, Hospital Lab Management and Wellness Solutions, in the past decade. Metropolis Healthcare began its international expansion in 2005 with Sri Lanka being the first market. It further expanded to UAE in 2006, followed by Kenya in 2013 and Mauritius and Ghana in 2014. In February 2018, Metropolis partnered with National Aids Control Organisation (NACO) for a three-year project for diagnosis of HIV at 560 locations in India. As of 2018, the diagnostic chain consists of 124 clinical laboratories and 2400 blood collection centers across India, Ghana, Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, Mauritius and Sri Lanka. In October 2019, Metropolis Healthcare acquired four individual laboratories, Doctor's Clinical Laboratory, Iyer Pathology Laboratory, Nagar Pathology Laboratory and Yash Clinical Laboratory, a subsidiary of Dr Lal PathLabs in Surat, Gujarat, for INR 18 crore. The acquisition was done in order to expand the penetration of Metropolis's wholly owned subsidiary Desai Laboratories. In October 2021, Metropolis completed the acquisition of South Indian diagnostic chain Hitech Diagnostic Centre and its subsidiary Centralab Healthcare Services for ₹636 crore.
== Overdose == Symptoms of overdose are due to excessive pharmacodynamic actions on β1-receptors, and with loss of cardioselectivity at high concentrations, β2-receptors. These include bradycardia (slow heartbeat), severe hypotension with shock, acute heart failure, hypoglycemia and bronchospastic reactions. Treatment is largely symptomatic. Hospitalization and intensive monitoring is indicated. Activated charcoal is useful to absorb the drug. Atropine will counteract bradycardia, glucagon helps with hypoglycemia, dobutamine can be given against hypotension and the inhalation of a β2-mimetic such as hexoprenalin or salbutamol will terminate bronchospasms. Blood or plasma atenolol concentrations may be measured to confirm a diagnosis of poisoning in hospitalized patients or to assist in a medicolegal death investigation. Plasma levels are usually less than 3 mg/L during therapeutic administration, but can range from 3–30 mg/L in overdose victims.

=== Neurodegenerative disorders === As suppression of autophagy has been indicated as a contributing factor in a variety of neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, rapamycin has been proposed as a potential treatment for these conditions, although results suggest it may not be effective in all cases.
==== Insurances Covering Gender Affirmative Care ==== Numerous insurances within the United States cover gender affirming care, which includes hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and surgery. However, this coverage is conditional and dependent on many factors, such as plan benefits, employer, and the state. In California most insurers are forbidden from banning gender affirming care coverage; however, insurers in other states don't have this restriction and can exclude coverage of gender affirming care. Each specific plan and policy will specify the coverage of gender affirming care. Most insurers covering gender affirming care will cover generic and FDA approved hormone replacement therapy. If a clinician recommends a brand name hormone replacement therapy, insurance will conditionally accept it based on recommendation, cost, policy, and healthcare needs. Some insurers that cover gender affirming care include Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Cigna, Aetna, Medicare, Tricare and UnitedHealthcare.
This is why managing waste generated by ORs is crucial to minimizing overall biomedical waste production. To reduce waste and cost of disposal, recycling and properly labeling waste are imperative. Reusing and repurposing products like gowns and instruments also limit costs and waste. Moreover, streamlining surgical trays and packaging of instruments also promotes a reduction in waste production. Energy saving methods in areas like HVAC systems and anesthesia must also be implemented to promote a "greener" healthcare industry. The reason ORs generate such an abundance of waste is because of a lack of education of surgeons regarding every surgical procedures' contribution to the carbon footprint. When asked in a survey, in a global cohort consisting of 1,024 surgeons, only 63% indicated that they regarded sustainability as an issue they felt motivated to change. Moreover, only 7.7% of surgeons could estimate the carbon footprint of a surgery, and only 6.5% could estimate their surgical supplies' carbon footprint. This shows an evident knowledge gap surgeons have in regards to the negative environmental effects of surgery and the need to rectify this through education.
== Method == Generally, negative ions are created (atoms are ionized) in an ion source. In fortunate cases, this already allows the suppression of an unwanted isobar, which does not form negative ions (as 14N in the case of 14C measurements). The pre-accelerated ions are usually separated by a first mass spectrometer of sector-field type and enter an electrostatic "tandem accelerator". This is a large nuclear particle accelerator based on the principle of a tandem van de Graaff accelerator operating at 0.2 to many million volts with two stages operating in tandem to accelerate the particles. At the connecting point between the two stages, the ions change charge from negative to positive by passing through a thin layer of matter ("stripping", either gas or a thin carbon foil). Molecules will break apart in this stripping stage. The complete suppression of molecular isobars (e.g. 13CH− in the case of 14C measurements) is one reason for the exceptional abundance sensitivity of AMS. Additionally, the impact strips off several of the ion's electrons, converting it into a positively charged ion. In the second half of the accelerator, the now positively charged ion is accelerated away from the highly positive centre of the electrostatic accelerator which previously attracted the negative ion. When the ions leave the accelerator they are positively charged and are moving at several percent of the speed of light. In the second stage of mass spectrometer, the fragments from the molecules are separated from the ions of interest.
Agriculture's role in developed countries has drastically changed in the last century due to many factors, including refrigeration. Statistics from the 2007 census gives information on the large concentration of agricultural sales coming from a small portion of the existing farms in the United States today. This is a partial result of the market created for the frozen meat trade by the first successful shipment of frozen sheep carcasses coming from New Zealand in the 1880s. As the market continued to grow, regulations on food processing and quality began to be enforced. Eventually, electricity was introduced into rural homes in the United States, which allowed refrigeration technology to continue to expand on the farm, increasing output per person. Today, refrigeration's use on the farm reduces humidity levels, avoids spoiling due to bacterial growth, and assists in preservation.

No. Epithalamin is a heterogeneous peptide fraction obtained from pineal gland extract and contains many components. Epitalon is a single synthetic tetrapeptide with the sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly. Researchers synthesised the shorter peptide while attempting to identify active sequences within the extract.
No endogenous peptide with this exact sequence has been described as a circulating hormone or signalling molecule. The tetrapeptide was designed as a synthetic analogue based on fragments observed in pineal preparations. Any activity discussed in the literature therefore refers to administered material rather than to a natural pool of the compound.
It is not an approved medicine in major jurisdictions and does not appear in the major pharmacopoeias. Material is usually distributed as a research chemical or laboratory reagent. Such labelling places handling responsibility on the purchaser and does not indicate that a regulatory body has reviewed the substance.
Sealed lyophilised powder is normally kept at minus twenty degrees Celsius or below, away from light and moisture. Vials are allowed to reach room temperature before opening to limit condensation. Repeated warming and cooling of the same vial is discouraged.
